Developing Your Brand

A positive way of developing your brand and reputation is something that will serve your business well, especially in the realm of social media. Not every brand is going to become a household name with millions of followers, but well-respected companies stand a better chance of influencing who buys from  them (and why) and to what frequency.

Developing a brand’s reputation isn’t something that’s going to happen overnight, but there are many different and useful tips to help you improve your own company’s reputation as an authentic, high-value brand.

8 Ways to Create and Portray Brand Authenticity

1: Figure out Your Purpose and Vision and Match Values

Before you begin your social marketing quest to brand your business, you have to start by taking self-inventory. What are your values, and how do they relate to what you want your brand to stand for? Since a brand should be a personal thing, it should be built on your values – on the values of your business. Your brand should be unwavering in this regard, and unafraid to hold that line.

2: Build a Network Using Organic Elements

Paid advertising is OK and, in most cases, actually necessary if you’re using Facebook, but organic reach has its place too. This is especially true when you’re dealing with brand authenticity. Allowing a network of social sites to develop and share organically—at least in part—really pushes a cleaner, more authentic image.

3: Cater to the Right Market

Authenticity in branding is sometimes as easy as catering to the right audience. For instance, if you’re catering to a broader market than you should be in an attempt to develop mass followers, then your advertising and branding methods are going to stand out as a little all over the place, subsequently giving you a fake, inorganic appearance.

Today’s brand marketing isn’t about reaching the largest audience, it’s about personalizing the experience for one person to build loyalty, as a result of brand authenticity and personal relevance. Watch your inboxes and mailboxes for our July issue, which covers this hot topic in depth.

4: Learn From Your Competition

Learning about your competitors is always a fantastic way to glean important information about your branding efforts. The more you understand about how others are appearing authentic, the easier it’s going to be for you to tweak things and to come across in a positive fashion. Sign up for your competition’s newsletters, Like them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter and Pinterest.

5: Ask For Feedback Regularly

If you want to know how the public views your brand, then make an effort to ask. It could be as simple as releasing a status update that asks the question, “What do you think about us?” Asking for feedback is par for the course, but make sure to follow up with each responder, so they know their feedback is heard and valued.

6: Honesty and Transparency as a Policy

One of the premier ways to ensure your brand is seen as authentic is to be very open about what’s going on behind the scenes and also with what’s coming down the pike. Make it a policy to be open and transparent, not only in your social media branding (e.g. posts, responses, who your brand follows, etc.) but in all of your online marketing. You will benefit greatly from this.

7: Don’t Lower Your Standards

There are many times when you will be tempted to roll around on the floor with the heathens on sites like Facebook, Twitter and Yelp, or even in your own comment sections. But if you care to notice, the biggest, most well-respected brands out there that engage with fans on social media only do so when they’re approached with positive intent. In other words, the flame-happy trolls don’t receive any feedback. And this is how it should be. Don’t lower your standards by playing around in the mud. Companies should attempt to take brand distraction offline by asking them to email someone within the business, so they can solve the issue at hand.

8: Incorporate an Actual Personality

No brand can remain all business, all the time and actually appear to be personable, transparent and authentic. What are you actually doing for the real people following your brand if you’re not allowing your brand to have its own personality? Your brand is a living, breathing thing that needs to have its own voice and personality. And while that voice should directly coincide with your values and your message, it’s still important to inject personality into it. This could include posting images of a company picnic or publishing notes on how a product launch really went down (e.g. long nights and lots of pizza).

Coming across as an authentic brand will open many doors that were seemingly unavailable. Believe it or not, brand authenticity and brand size have a direct correlation. In other words, those brands viewed as authentic are those brands that become household names and big players. Fortunately, social media and the Web, in general, can even the playing field. But before you go tinkering around with the recipe in order to boost your brand’s reach, look at it from an organic, authentic standpoint.

Join a Safelist.

A way you can advertise online is to join an online group, called a safelist group.

Safelists are groups of like minded people interested in receiving offers or ads from particular categories. In other words, they are group consisting of opt-in subscribers willing to receive solo offers from the other members, there are certain emailing restrictions imposed by some of these safelists, so make sure you find out what you’re allowed to do and how often. Not all safelists can guarantee success, you will need to do a little homework with the safelist you choose in order for it to be worth its while.

Safelist Guidelines

If you follow these guidelines it should improve your success with choosing the right safelist for what you require.

  • Decide on your target audience: You need to know what type of visitor you are targeting before you can choose the right safelist for your needs. You need to take into account your current subscribers, if any. If you do not have any current subscribers then you need to make an educated guess as to the type of visitor that you wish to target, I would suggest you target around your chosen niche.
  • Set yourself a budget and stick to it: There are some free safelists, however, for any decent quality safelist you will have to pay, it may not be a lot but it all adds up, so be sure to keep to your budget. Take into account the conditions that your chosen safelist has, for example, a group of safelists may cost you $25 but they may only allow you to use the list once, but there may be a similar group for $50 that allows you to send as many times as you please, in the long run the $50 group will be the most cost effective.
  • Do your homework: It is really important that you read the small print that comes with these safelists, some of these safelists have restrictions and limitations that they may not make obvious. Read all the details so you can email with the confidence that it won’t get you in bother.

The Pros and The Cons

This is a great way to be able to do a quick mass emailing, but on the downside, you should probably expect to receive a large number of other members emails, if you choose to use this resource, I would recommend you set up a separate email address that is solely for this purpose, unless of course you like reading hundreds of emails!

The other drawback to using these groups is that they may not have enough members, or should I say enough members who read their emails, to provide you with a steady stream of paying customers, after a while, these same members grow tired of seeing the same email over and over, so this is not really the best marketing venue in my opinion. However, I do know that some very big online marketers have started out using this method so maybe if you read into it enough you could get lucky.

A few of the best safelists I found were Web Traffic Marketing, 101 Web Traffic  and Business World List.

Stimulate WordPress

WordPress is, as I am sure the majority of people are aware, the best free blogging platform around today. It is so user friendly and easy to use, right up until it all goes WRONG! You know the situation, you install a new plugin or change your theme and suddenly something breaks your site.

The first thing that runs through your head is “How the heck do I fix this?” Then it dawns on you, your site is now broken and all your visitors are seeing it! That’s not going to create a good impression, they’re not likely to hang around and wait until you’ve worked out what went wrong and fixed it, they’re going to go somewhere else… Now you’re in a rush, you try to roll back the changes and even that doesn’t work… Panic starts to set in… None of this needed to happen, how often do you see this kind of crap happen to the “Pro’s”? It does happen to them, but no one ever gets to see it.. Why? Simple, they have a secret to developing their sites and testing everything out safely, without anyone getting to see their mistakes.

So today I want to give you the heads up on a newly released tool that will help you transform the way you build, test, & repair WordPress sites faster than otherwise possible. If like me you sometimes find WordPress development slow then you should take a look this. Matt Garrett, a personal friend and pro blogger of some 10 years & his techies have found an easy way to run a rapid test version of WordPress on any PC or MAC. The traditional way of doing this involves editing complex server files & following multi-step install procedures.

Matt doesn’t release many products, the last 3 have all been top sellers – I have no doubt this one will be too.

It’s one of those products that won’t immediately put money in your pocket but its one you’ll wish you knew about years earlier as it makes life a lot easier.

Keyword Research

keyword research Tools

One needs to choose those keywords that are frequently searched for and which is in high demand, but ones not being already used by many other websites and competitors, and thus with low competition.

There are a number of keyword research tools that can help you find them.

WordTracker keyword suggestion tool is free and easy to use.

For example if you type ‘Computer’, the WordTracker search suggestion tool will tell you that during the last month the word ‘Computer’ was searched, say for example 45955 times. Similarly ‘computer game’ was searched 30221 times.

Also, given one word it will tell you all relevant combinations of that word, which are based on actual searches done by people. If the word you keyed in is not a common search term then you will not get any results. It means that very few people have actually searched for that word during the last month.

Even Google Keyword Tool generates potential keywords for your ad campaign and reports their Google statistics, including search performance and seasonal trends.

Features of this tool include,

– Sorting the results of your desired keyword search by popularity, past performance history within the AdWords system, cost, and predicted ad position.

– Easy keyword manipulation where you can select a few keywords here and there or add them all at once.

– Searches for keywords present even in any webpage URL specified by your search. It can also expand your keyword search even further to include those pages that are linked to or from the original URL page.

– More keyword results are generated based on regularly updated usage statistics database. This helps you to get new keywords or phrases.

These sites are useful for researching how people search the web and then optimizing your own pages so that more people find your site.

Using Keywords In Page Titles

It is recommended to use keywords in page titles itself. This title tag is different from a Meta tag, but it’s worth considering it in relation to them.

Whatever text one places in the title tag (between the <title> and </title> portions) will appear in the title bar of browsers when they view the web page.

Some browsers also append whatever you put in the title tag by adding their own name, as for example Microsoft’s Internet Explorer or OPERA.

The actual text you use in the title tag is one of the most important factors in how a search engine may decide to rank your web page. In addition, all major web crawlers will use the text of your title tag as the text they use for the title of your page in your listings.

If you have designed your website as a series of websites or linked pages and not just a single Home Page, you must bear in mind that each page of your website must be search engine optimized. The title of each page i.e. the keywords you use on that page and the phrases you use in the content will draw traffic to your site.

The unique combination of these words and phrases and content will draw customers using different search engine terms and techniques, so be sure you capture all the keywords and phrases you need for each product, service or information page.

The most common mistake made by small business owners when they first design their website is to place their business name or firm name in every title of every page.

Actually most of your prospective customers do not bother to know the name of your firm until after they have looked at your site and decided it is worth book marking.

So, while you want your business name in the title of the home page, it is probably a waste of valuable keywords and space to put it in the title line of every page on your site.

Why not consider putting keywords in the title so that your page will display closer to the top of the search engine listing.

Dedicating first three positions for keywords in title avoiding the stop words like ‘and’, ‘at’ and the like is crucial in search engine optimization.

Viral Marketing Ideas

Here are six ideas to help you start your viral marketing campaign:

1. Purchase the branding rights to a viral E-book. Allow people to give away your free E-book to their visitors. Then, their visitors will also give it away. This will just continue to spread your ad all over the Internet.

2. If you have the ability to set up a forum or other bulletin board, you really have a great tool. Allow people to use your online discussion board for their own website. Some people don’t have one. Just include your banner ad at the top of the board.

3. Do you have a knack for web design? Create some templates, graphics, etc. and upload them to your site. Then, allow people to give away your free web design graphics, fonts, templates, etc. Just include your ad on them or require people to link directly to your web site. Make sure that you include a link back to your site in the copyright notice and require them to keep your copyright notice in tact.

4. Write an E-book. Allow people to place an advertisement in your free E-book if, in exchange, they give away the E-book to their web visitors or E-zine subscribers.

5. Write articles that pertain to your product or service. Allow people to reprint your articles on their website, in their E-zine, newsletter, magazine or E-books. Include your resource box and the option for article reprints at the bottom of each article.

6. You can easily find products on the Internet that will sell you a license allowing you to distribute the product free of charge to other people. Look for those products that provide “branding rights”. That is where you can include your own name, website, and contact information.

Using Videos in Viral Marketing

More and more advertisers are adopting video as broadband continues to rise and ad-serving technologies become more sophisticated.

Online video advertising is really taking off. User’s attention can be captured and ads stand out from the crowd in an increasingly ad-cluttered online environment.

It is true that video formats cost five to ten times more to serve than standard banners and they involve a lot more production and implementation work but they may well be worth all of that if they achieve greater response rates.

Where to use online video if wishing to maximize its effect, is what advertisers must carefully consider. Video to be used on the Internet should be information and communication focused while video to be used on television should be focused on entertainment.

Like everything else, there are good ways and bad ways to use video advertising. Right now most marketers are incorporating their audio-visual content into existing embedded ad formats like banners or over-content formats like pop-ups. Though this could reach a potentially large audience, viewers are likely to be less captivated and more annoyed by these disruptive and distracting placements.

Cached or streaming video on a specific destination site offers the best chance of interesting consumers in brand messages, but it is not likely to reach a large audience unless it generates a viral outcome.

Whatever you come up with, don’t forget to make it easy to open and distribute. File size is important, as is the media format. If your viral video has been created for a particular type of software that not many people use, how will you get people to spread it like wildfire?

Also, if you’ve made a video the impact will be better if you send the clip as an attachment rather than stream it. It’s cheaper and, if you’re not hosting it, it’s more viral, too.

Your E-book is your Viral Salesman

Your E-book is your Viral Salesman

E-books are the future and the future is now. The printed word on paper and bound into books used to be the only way information was given and received. They were great, you could take them with you and put them on shelves and they do still exist and will continue to for the foreseeable future but the time of the E-book has arrived.

The marketing E-book is a slightly different animal from just an E-book. Marketing E-books contain text, images, links to web pages and navigation controls. The marketing E-book has become a very important part of marketing on the Internet.

With a marketing E-book you can present your story in an effective way and include links to your web sales pages. Your E-book can become your best salesman.

First, your E-book needs to be interesting and informative. It always has links back to your web site and to your sales page.

Next, be sure that you have a prominent section telling readers that they are free to give your E-book away. Let them know that they can post it on their site as a free download, that they can use it as a bonus, and that they can bundle it with other products. This is the way to create viral marketing for your products or services. Remember those links back to your site contained in the E-book?

Last but certainly not least before you send your E-book out to the world, double check spelling and grammar and be sure that you have tested every link to verify that it goes where it is supposed to go. Obvious errors will reflect badly on you and will not be of much value to you, it could even by damaging.

Post your E-book to some of the E-book directories. Many let you post it for free, or will let you post a link on their site to your E-book.

What an E-book Can Do for You

An E-book that includes your marketing message and a link to your website is a proven technique in viral marketing. This method uses the multiplication effect to ‘explode’ the distribution of your message by willing participants.

This is the basic principle that was used by Hotmail to get established. When the two founders set up their free email system, all the messages that were sent by subscribers had a text message at the bottom which identified Hotmail as the origin. People who sent emails to their friends advertised the free email site.

Using viral E-books as a marketing method is cheap. It doesn’t take long to set up and it’s even quicker if you use rebrandable E-books that have been written by others.

Just use your favorite search engine and do a web search. You will find many rebrandable E-books that are available on whatever subject you are interested in and that apply to your e-business.

One method of distributing the E-book is to offer it to visitors in exchange for subscribing to your newsletter. If they pass it on to their friends and family it will promote your business for you.

E-books are capable of reaching a large audience and are limited only by the enthusiasm of the participants.

E-books are fairly easy to create. It’s possible to produce your own E-books by combining articles that you have written or have gotten from public domain sources, such as directories.

A common approach is to use material that has Private Label Rights, including articles and reports that have been written specifically for that purpose, for that niche.

Using a portion of a larger work that you have prepared such as the first three chapters of a large E-book could also be used as a viral E-book.
