How Much Traffic Does a Website Get

When the average person visits a website for the first time, their eyes follow an F-pattern.

When I visit a website for the first time, I look at something else. In less than a second, I have a decent idea of how much traffic that website gets which helps me decide whether or not to stay.

Knowing how much traffic a website gets helps you validate the website’s content and lets you know how much traffic you need to get to see similar results.

Below you will discover 10 ways to see how much traffic does a website get.

1. Alexa Ranking

The Alexa Ranking isn’t exactly “little-known,” but it is the best-known metric for ranking websites. This is the first thing I look at when I visit a site:

Alexa tracks stats for everyone who has the Alexa toolbar installed on their browser, which accounts for less than 1% of internet users. So it’s not very accurate, but it’ll give you a rough idea of the website’s popularity.

  1. If you use Chrome, install the Alexa Extension.
  2. If you use Firefox, get the Alexa Add-On.
  3. If you use Internet Explorer, switch to Chrome. If you insist, you can download the Alexa Toolbar.

Alexa’s reliability is shaky, some argue that it’s worthless so it’s important to consider other metrics.

2. Compete.com

Compete.com is like Alexa, except they pull their stats from multiple sources and it’s only based on U.S. traffic.

Based on checking my sites and Income Diary, the “Unique Visitors” stat that it generates is much lower than the actual traffic.

3. SimilarWeb.com

SimilarWeb is another website traffic checker that’s similar to Alexa and Compete, except, it’s got a lot more detail put into it, so it’s more accurate!

ID SimilarWebThe main takeaway is that it gives you a line graph with values for the number of daily unique visitors and the sources. You can see the countries that your traffic comes from, top referring sites, the top destination sites (sites people visit after yours), display ads, audience interests, and up to 10 organic keywords with the free version.

4. FeedCompare.com

Feed Compare is a neat tool that lets you see how many RSS subscribers a website has as long as they use FeedBurner.

Step 1: Find the FeedBurner ID for a blog you’d like to check:

SethsMainBlog Feedburner
Most sites should link directly to their RSS feed on FeedBurner. Look for the orange icon.

Step 2: Put the FeedBurner ID into Feed Compare’s tool.

Seth Godin Feed Compare
As you can see, Seth Godin has over 500,000 subscribers and it grew 1,500 in one day.

5. SEMRush.com

A great tool for website based keyword research is SEMRush.com. Here’s a screenshot when you search IncomeDiary.com:

SEMRush Income Diary
As you see, Michael ranks 1st for “internet businesses,” 4th for “how to make money blogging,” and 6th for “how to make money online.” Those are highly competitive keywords that are collectively searched over 20,000 times per month.

As you go down the list, you can start to estimate how much traffic he gets for each keyword based on the position and search volume.

6. YouTube or Vimeo Views

If a website has a YouTube or Vimeo video embedded on the homepage, click to “Watch on YouTube.”

Dollar Shave Club YouTube Video
If the video is public, both YouTube and Vimeo will show the view counts. Also check the upload date to estimate how many people view it per month.

Dollar Shave Club YouTube Views
Just because the homepage Dollar Shave Club video has almost 4 million views doesn’t mean that their site had 4 million views. But it gives you some idea of how much traffic they got in their first month.

7. Blog Post Comments

Another way to gauge the popularity of a blog is to look at how many comments it gets per post.

With my sites, I’ve found that an average of 1 out of every 200 readers leaves a comment. So a post with 20 non-Nicholas comments was viewed about 4,000 times. This changes with every post and every blog, but again, it gives you a general idea.

8. Total Comment Counts

Immediately after you comment on a WordPress blog, your browser redirects you to where your comment will show up. If you look at the URL, you’ll see something that looks like this:

Total Comment Counts

The second half of the URL tells you that you left the 108,656th comment on IncomeDiary.com. This number includes spam comments. Assume that 75-90% of the comments are spam and you can get an idea of how many comments a site has had since day one.

9. Check their Archives

In the beginning, lots of bloggers share all of their stats about how much traffic their site is getting and where this traffic is coming from. As the blog grows, this information becomes more and more valuable so most bloggers stop sharing it.

If you peruse through the archived articles on a blog, there’s a good chance you’ll stumble upon a “blog in review” or “traffic report” post. With those stats, you can start to figure out how much traffic the site is getting today.

A few sites, like ThinkTraffic.net, choose to publish traffic reports every month because those stats are very relevant to their audiences.

10. Check “Advertise Here” Pages

By far, the most accurate way to figure out how much traffic a website gets is to go to their Advertising page.

If a blog is trying to sell advertising space, they need to tell you exactly how many unique views and impressions your ad is going to get every month.

If you sell advertising space on BuySellAds, you need to share your monthly unique and monthly impressions.

The Final Word

Unless the owner of the website reveals exactly how much traffic they’re getting, every other figure is a best guess. Most tools are surprisingly inaccurate when it comes to generating stats. They are good, however, for comparing yourself against others.

Do you know of any other ways to figure out how much traffic does a website site get?

SEO For Traffic Generation

Search engine optimisation or ‘SEO’ as it is more commonly known, is basically the method of improving your website so that it is optimised to get found on search engines more effectively. By optimising your website for the search engines your website gets a higher ranking and therefore gets placed higher in the listing of search results.

There are many different aspects of SEO that can improve your website, such as keywords, content and layout, some are visible to website visitors and others are only used for search engine ‘spiders’ to help the site get ranked better. A web spider is basically a program which scans the pages of your website by following each link and generating information from your website, a search engine would use this in order to give your website proper rankings.

If you have never attempted SEO or web editing before then I suggest you seek some professional advice or help if you want your website found in ‘organic’ search results, organic results are quite simply results that have not been paid for by advertisers. If you are fairly confident you can do some basic editing then here are a few pointers for you.

Decide on your keywords (very important), I would recommend you try to stick to around three keyword terms for your website. Make sure you keep all your keyword terms related to the content in your website and they must also be targeted on the same niche as search engines will score your website on its relevancy.

When choosing your keyword terms, try not to make them too specific as the competition to get ranked highly with a specific or ‘general’ keyword will be far too great. However, feel free to try if you think you have a unique keyword. The best kind of keyword in my opinion is the ‘long tail’ keywords I spoke about in the article marketing section. Basically, an extended version of your keyword, so if you were using the keyword ‘blogging’ for example, it would become ‘blogging for great reasons’ or ‘blogging for new methods of traffic’ and so on.

keyword tools which will give you better long tail keywords are WordTracker Keywords and also SEOBook keyword tools.

The density of your keywords in your website content is also a factor that the search engines take into consideration when they scan your website. The search engines will look at your website to see how many times you use a certain word or phrase, the more times the word or phrase is used throughout a page, the higher the density. The search engines are very clever with their checks however, so do not be tempted to simply cram a load of keywords into a page, because as well as the readers enjoyment spoiled, you will get penalized by the search engine for it. The average that Google recommend for keyword density at this time is around 2%-5%, Yahoo and MSN are slightly higher, around 2%-9% keyword density.

Keeping your website content fresh and unique is also another important factor of SEO, for this reason the search engines love blogs and news related sites, as they are constantly updated with fresh and unique content. One third of your website must be different from any other website in order for it to be considered as unique.

Use variations of your chosen keyword terms throughout the content of your site, mix them up a little, add additional words, add plurals etc. Make sure you have your chosen terms at the top, middle and bottom of your pages.

Enlist a little help from some excellent software like Brad Callen’s SEO Elite, this will save you a load of time and get you much better results, which will in turn earn you a lot more money from your traffic. You could even set up your own SEO business, helping others with software like this.

If you want to improve the SEO of your blog, there is a great plugin called ‘All-In-One SEO Pack’ that will help you out quite a bit.

This next part is one of my pet hates with some websites. Navigation, your website must be user friendly to navigate and all the links must work or you will be penalised again. How many times have you came across a fantastic looking website but you simply cannot navigate your way around it? I know I have loads of times and it’s a crying shame as these sites look so good with great content. A good way to test your site is to give it to a website newbie or a child and ask them to find their way around the site.

Whatever you do, make sure you do not just dismiss SEO as a high ranking in organic (results that have not been paid for) search results will get you some serious traffic, not just temporary, but if you keep on top of it you can have serious traffic for good.

What has happened to your traffic!!

Maybe it’s been happening over the past few weeks, or even months. Slowly, but surely, you’ve been watching your traffic numbers decline, despite not having changed much of anything about the way you publish content or optimize your website for the search engines. So exactly what has happened to your traffic.

Naturally, you’ll want to know exactly what’s going on and what’s causing this continual dip in traffic. For some problems, you may be able to look at your analytics platform to determine what content is seeing its traffic numbers decrease, which could help you clearly identify where you’re struggling.

However, in most cases, you’ll have to perform some kind of search result audit for your various keywords that will show you where you’re currently ranking on Google and its competitors for your most important keywords. Ultimately, this could reveal one (or more) issues that are holding you down in the SERPs and, thus, negatively affecting your traffic numbers.

But before you begin investigating, it might be helpful to know what you should be on the lookout for. So, here are the five most likely reasons that you’ve been seeing your website traffic decrease:

New Competition

Too many website owners and SEO professionals tend to a take an “it’s all about me” approach to their work, and when they start to have an issue like declining traffic, their initial instinct is to wonder what it is THEY are doing wrong and what THEY have to do to fix it. However, few immediately consider the possibility of a new website (or sites) that have moved into their niche and are luring away some of their traffic by offering comparable products or content. This is one of the reasons why conducting regular industry assessments and search audits is imperative.

Content is Out of Date

Every good content creator strives to make something evergreen that will last forever, so that visitors will consistently come to his or her website to read it. However, over time, the majority of content will become dated, and its value will begin to depreciate at a regular pace. One way to tell if your content isn’t as enticing to searchers as it used to be is to monitor that page’s analytics, and if something that used to get a consistently high influx of visitors now gets less and less, it’s likely that the content on the page is decreasing in value to most readers. A method for correcting this issue could be to produce a new, updated version of that content, and then to link to the new page on the old one.

Shifts in Algorithm Values

This is another instance where your decreasing traffic isn’t actually your fault. Occasionally, Google and the other search engines will alter their algorithms to give more weight to certain types of content for specific search terms. When that happens, images, videos, wiki pages or other content that is slightly different from standard Web pages may be given prominence over your site, which can have an effect on how much traffic you get from that search engine. If you notice that Google seems to favor certain types of content for one of your keywords or targeted search terms, maybe that means you should consider making a video or infographic the next time you consider writing a blog post about a that topic.

Caught Red Handed Being a Black Hat

imagesAt other times, SEOs are knowingly or unknowingly participating in “black hat” SEO tactics in order to move their sites higher up in the SERPs. Once Google and the others bust you – and they almost always will – they’ll penalize your site and send you way down in the rankings, and that will obviously affect your traffic. If you genuinely weren’t intending to be shady and just made a mistake, it’s important that you find out what your exact offense was and correct it as soon as possible, so that you can start trying to garner some good will with the search engines and make your way back up in the rankings.

They’re Just Not That into Your Content

However, the unfortunate truth is that much of the time, consumers just aren’t going to be that interested in the content that you’re publishing, meaning it’s not engaging or valuable enough to hold their attention and keep them coming back for more. And without engaging content, your traffic numbers are going to suffer. To rectify this problem, you should be aware of the top sites and blogs in your niche or industry, and take note of what they’re regularly publishing content about (in order to understand emerging trends) and what their readers are saying in comments sections and on social media sites to see what they’re asking for, so that you have a better idea of what content will be engaging and valuable to the visitors you want to attract.

Do Traffic Exchanges Really Work

How To Make Money With Traffic Exchanges

A traffic exchange is a site where you can get new visitors to your web site in exchange for viewing the sites of other members. Users rapidly view a number of sites and it is then the job of the site owners and advertisers to present interesting & eye catching material.

There are many hundreds of traffic exchange sites on the internet and finding the ones that are good can be difficult.

The key to using traffic exchanges effectively is understanding that the person will only be viewing your site for around 10 – 20 seconds, sometimes a little longer. Rather than sending the person to your regular home page, you should be sending them to a specific “landing page” or advertisement designed for traffic exchanges. Use this advertisement to create curiosity about your site. The most effective are squeeze pages or splash pages, which have a simple headline, description, and an opt-in form to receive future emails. Then the surfer can easily type their email address in and receive more information about your product or services at a later time. A main goal of using traffic exchanges should be to build your personal list of business prospects for now and future endeavors.

How Does It Work?
It’s simple: You look at other people’s blogs & sites, and then they look at yours.

Most programs require you to click a button every 6-30 seconds in order to view the next page and earn credits. There is usually some kind of security measure to prevent users from cheating by surfing too quickly. And to prevent bots, the user is often also required to enter a captcha code regularly while surfing. This means that the surfer is definitely going to see your material and click through to your site.

So How Do I Make Money?
Typically “surfers” will be directed to information about your product, a blog post, or an affiliate offer. Affiliate networks such as ClickBank are especially well suited for use with traffic exchanges. Linkshare and Commission Junction are two others to try. Note that pay-per-click programs such as Google AdSense generally prohibit placements on traffic exchanges because their model is incentivised clicks, thus making it impossible for a user to simply “browse” offers.

Here Are Eight Steps To Get Started
1.Take your time to understand the traffic exchange market and structure a campaign accordingly. Spend some time acquainting yourself with the various advertising mediums available such as full page views, banner and text ad displays and various other alternatives offered by a variety of traffic exchanges.
2.Choose between five and ten highly ranked and used traffic exchanges and begin to build up advertising credits within these exchanges in preparation to launch your campaign. Try and allocate a set period of at least thirty minutes per day to this task.
3.Begin designing and structuring your campaign which should include a splash page (a fast loading page with a simple message prompting the surfer to open your site in a new window), a squeeze or lead capture page (a page designed with the sole purpose of getting the viewer to request more information from you via email) and a well written email follow up campaign that stays on message while offering the reader genuine help and assistance. Several squeeze and splash pages should be designed so that you can track effectiveness and constantly be able to adjust your pages for better results.
4.Set up an tracking mechanism to track splash page effectiveness. This can be done via Google Analytics, by reading your server log files, or there are specific ad tracking services available.
5.Set some realistic goals based on a formula that every lead you generate should be worth on average at least $1 per month to you.
6.Start your campaign and analyze the effectiveness of your message. If no one is jumping, you can create a new ad or edit your existing one.
7.Continually monitor results and tweak accordingly to realize profit.
8.Consider ramping up profitable campaign by buying advertising credits.

pinterest

So just how do you get traffic from Pinterest?

1 Be Active on Pinterest

As any social network, Pinterest is a huge thief of time. You need to spend time on it daily in order to be able to follow what others are pinning, to comment on it, etc. You can’t expect benefits from Pinterest, if you are not active on it on a daily basis.

2 Use High Quality Images

Pinterest is about visual appeal. This is why you can’t go with crappy images taken with your 10 year old mobile. You need images with professional quality because otherwise you will be doing your brand more harm than good. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to hire a professional photographer – with the right equipment and some skills you can create the images on your own.

3 Post in Series

When you keep your followers interested, they develop the habit of visiting your board every now and then. One trick to keep your users interested is to post in series. In other words, if you have 10 images you want to post, don’t post them all at once but post them one a day in the course of 10 days, stating that this is image 1 of 10, 2 of 10, etc.

4 Add a Pin-It Button to Your Site

If you want to get repins, you need to make it easier for users to do it. One way of doing it is by adding a Pin-It button to your site. Check what Pin-It buttons are available for your platform (i.e. WordPress, Joomla, etc.), pick one of them, put it on a visible place on your site and begin counting your pins/repins.

5 Post Interesting Stuff Not Limited to Your Products/Services Only

People are hardly coming to your board to see your products, so post other interesting pictures that will attract users (or keep them, if you already managed to attract them). This helps to attract new users to your account because when they see a cool pic somewhere on Pinterest, chances are they will visit your profile and have a look at your products there. If you post only images of your products, you won’t be able to attract random visitors that much.

6 Write Interesting and Meaningful Descriptions

Photos are the bait but even the most unambiguous photo will benefit from a good description. Additionally, a good description will help your images rank better with search engines, which means more traffic for you. Be concise and precise in your descriptions and your users will certainly appreciate it.

7 Use Hashtags (Wisely) and Categorize Your Boards

When you use hashtags and when you categorize your pins, this makes them look more organized and they will be easier to find. On the other hand, don’t use hashtags at large – i.e. add a hashtag only if you really need it because otherwise your pins will look spammy and users will skip them.

8 Follow Users with Large Followers Groups

When you pick whom to follow, consider not only if their pins are interesting but also if they have a large group of followers. When you follow such users, and especially if they decide to follow you back, their huge follower base is an undisputed advantage when they decide to repin something you have posted. With such power users one repin can bring crowds to your board!

9 Repin Interesting Stuff

Like any social network, interaction with other users is key on Pinterest. Because of this, it makes a lot of sense to like and comment on other people’s pins. These give you more visibility, not to mention that in return you can get some repins, likes, and comments from other users. However, as with hashtags, you do need to have measure – i.e. don’t repin, comment, or like every single pin you see on your screen, because this devaluates your contribution.

10 Use Videos, Charts, Infographics

Pinterest is not only about static stuff, there is a video section as well. Of course, this is not YouTube but if you can create a cool video about your business, don’t be shy to post it. Also, in addition to images, you can use various charts and infographics – these are especially popular among users.

Pinterest is an interesting place and you will hardly have to force yourself to use it. Of course, its main advantage for you is the publicity you get. You might not be able to make a sale on Pinterest but the exposure and the traffic to your site are valuable prerequisites for making more sales, so if your products are suitable for the Pinterest format and audience, don’t hesitate but promote them there.
